AMMAN — The Economic and Social Council on Monday raised the issue of defaulters and the imprisonment of debtors during a dialogue session headed by Speaker of the Council Mustafa Hamarneh.

The session, according to Hamarneh, aimed to contribute to finding legal and humanitarian solutions to the problem, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. During the session, participants highlighted various preventive measures, including amending legislations that limit the defaulting and imprisonment of a debtor.

The participants also discussed the establishment of a national database with the Ministry of Justice in cooperation with the Central Bank of Jordan. Among the session’s recommendations was finding a mechanism to abolish the imprisonment penalty only for amounts ranging from JD1 to JD2,000.

The council also proposed granting the right for judges to waive the imprisonment penalty for sums ranging from JD2,001 to JD5,000, with certain exceptions.
