AMMAN — The Cabinet on Sunday approved draft amendments to the penal code of 2022 meant to enhance the rule of law by tightening penalties for crimes that would impact society’s security.
The draft amendments also promote non-custodial measures and make them easier to implement, leaving it for the court to hand down the maximum penalty, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
The draft amendments also intensified penalties against those who found guilty of breaching their commitments in the contracts signed with the government or with any public administrations for any gains or causing harm to the public administration.
Deliberate distortions and piracy of the government's database will be deemed a forgery, hence a criminal act, as per the draft amendments.
The amendments also introduced tougher penalties for begging, in addition to those who would "terrorise" others by resorting to violence or threatening.
The Cabinet also passed an amendment to the customs service fee bylaw on imports of 2022.
The Council of Ministers also approved the Jordanian norm-referenced ranking of 2021, considering it a national document.
