AMMAN — The Environment Directorate at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) on Tuesday announced collecting approximately 70 tonnes of waste from the Gulf of Aqaba spanning an area of 10km during a beach cleaning campaign, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.
During the campaign, the largest of its kind in recent years, ASEZA divers were able to collect waste dating back to 20 years, including car tyres previously used to protect boats operating at sea, in addition to large quantities of plastic materials that had accumulated as a result of random waste dumping on the seashore.
The authority added that the authority has an environmental plan for planting trees in the industrial area south of Aqaba, noting that industrial companies in the area have been directed to plant a specific percentage of the areas they own in order to contribute to maintaining ecological balance and increasing the percentage of oxygen in a pollutant-free atmosphere.
