AMMAN — The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) foiled several drug smuggling attempts and seized a total of 624,000 narcotic pills last week, according to a Public Security Department (PSD) statement.

In a major case, the AND received a tip-off indicating that a large number of narcotic pills was allegedly being prepared for smuggling inside a truck, the PSD added.

The AND followed up on the tip-off and located the truck in one of the eastern regions of the Kingdom as it was heading to the border, according to the statement.

The AND found 225,000 narcotic pills hidden in secret compartments and arrested three suspects, the PSD statement said.

At one of the southern border crossings, the AND seized 180,000 pills hidden inside a vehicle’s fuel tank. The department had received a tip-off about two Arab nationals allegedly planning to smuggle the narcotics outside the country, according to the statement.

One of the suspects was arrested while the other is still on the run.

In a northern Badia area, the AND seized 175,000 pills during a raid on a location where they suspected narcotics to be hidden in a truck, the PSD statement continued. The suspects involved in the case were not apprehended and they are on the run.

In Amman, the department’s personnel pursued a suspected drug dealer after receiving a tip-off that he was trying to move large amounts of narcotics in his vehicle.

The suspect was arrested and 44,000 pills were found in his vehicle.

At one of the border crossings, the AND found a suspicious carton containing 20,000 narcotic pills. Investigations are still under way to identify those involved in the case.

The PSD said that all suspects have been referred to the State Security Court.
