AMMAN — Important investment opportunities in the field of agricultural-product storage could bring "ample financial returns" for stakeholders, Minister of Agriculture Ibrahim Shahahdeh recently said.

In a coordination meeting with representatives of the industrial and agricultural sectors at the Amman Chamber of Industry headquarters, Shahahdeh revealed that the ministry’s vision for next year is to “focus on enhancing the role of the storage sector as a high added value for Jordanian agricultural products”.

In a statement, Shahahdeh said that the ministry will study ways to help enhance investment in the storage sector and will seek to address the obstacles hindering it.

“The potential of this sector constitutes a national interest in enhancing food security, the stability of agricultural prices in the Kingdom and the protection of both farmer and citizen interests,” he added.

Pointing to achievements in warehousing operations last year, especially in the case of onions and potatoes, the minister said that the two commodities were made available outside their season of harvest and at affordable prices.

He stressed the need to take advantage of similar investment opportunities that would encourage farmers to plant storable crops such as varieties of citrus, onions, potatoes and garlic.

During the meeting, Head of the Jordan and Amman Chambers of Industry Fathi Jaghbir expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts to "protect the national industries”, calling for “removing the obstacles facing Jordanian exports, whether industrial or agricultural”.

He added that the industrial sector is "keen to use national agricultural and animal products for manufacturing and promote investing in this field”.
