AMMAN — A total of 19,178 electricity violations has been recorded by the Energy & Minerals Regulatory Commission (EMRC) in cooperation with the electricity distribution companies and security forces since the beginning of the year until October, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Saturday.

Joint teams conducted 247,000 vists during which they detected the cases of electricity theft and other violations on the power grid across the Kingdom.

Chairman Farouq Hiyari on Saturday highlighted the efforts exerted by the commission to address this phenomenon, noting that the cases recorded during the past 10 months show the concern to address the issue, to “guarantee the rights of citizens to an uninterrupted electricity supply and protect public property”.

Hiyari said that the commission’s law enforcing body has detected 9,191 cases of the total cases recorded.

The number of violations recorded by the commission under the Jordan Electric Power Company (JEPCO) areas was 6,318 cases, 1,883 in the areas of Irbid District Electricity Company (IDECO) and 990 in the areas of the Electricity Distribution Company (EDCO).

The PSD and Gendarmerie forces recorded 2,241 cases, 1,319 cases of which were in the areas of JEPCO, 267 were in IDECO area and 655 in EDCO areas.

In October alone, the number of cases detected by the commission and other forces reached 1,025.

Hiyari called on the public to report any suspected thefts or damage to electrical property and urged electricity distribution companies to refer the violators to specialised courts to protect the electric power system.

Stealing or tampering with the electricity grid is punishable by a six-month to two-year imprisonment, or a fine no less than JD2,000 and no more than JD10,000, or both penalties.
