AMMAN — Forestry land in Jordan amounts to 1.6 million dunums, including both natural and planted forests, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported on Monday.

The Agriculture Ministry is responsible for protecting the lands across the Kingdom, Nimer Haddadin, the ministry spokesperson said. Haddadin noted that the ministry has taken several measures to develop the forestry sector and combat violations such as illegal logging, in cooperation with relevant institutions.

The ministry is also working on increasing the green cover and has implemented several projects to increase the numbers of trees, the official said, adding that the number of wildfires declined over the last three years.

The total area of forest lands that were destroyed by fires over those three years was 1,327 dunums, according to Haddadin.
