Vetoing the veto

Oct 11,2016 - Last updated at Oct 11,2016

It is high time the United Nations General Assembly got rid of the “veto”.

It has come to a stage where no common sense prevails anymore in the Security Council proceedings.

No resolution that was passed has worked fully, and the ones that are badly needed are often vetoed.

I am no politician, but I strongly believe that this way of dealing with “life and death” issues has proved futile.

I have not seen a single important resolution that passed bring positive change in the lives of the people concerned.

When it had to do with the Palestinian-Israeli issue, the Americans invariably vetoed.

Now with the most damaging and destructive Syrian issue, the Russians veto.

What is happening in Syria is preposterous. It is no more humanly possible to watch this human tragedy.

Listening to the UN officials talking about the Syrian crisis is disheartening.

How long do we have to sit and watch this drama?

If politicians and diplomats still have a human side to them, they should stop this war.

Finally a word of thanks to all the UN organisations that are trying their best to get the refugee issues sorted out.

I strongly believe that each one of us in our own space can make a contribution to the betterment of humanity.

We should work hand in hand to make this world a better and safer place for our children.

It can be done by getting rid of the UN veto.
