AMMAN — The Criminal Court has sentenced a 24-year-old man to 20 years in prison for murdering his friend in an Amman neighbourhood in April 2011.
The court declared R.K. guilty of stabbing Hussein Rashid to death in the street on April 6 and handed him the maximum punishment.
Court transcripts said the defendant and the victim knew each other from working together and had a minor scuffle on the day of the incident.
“Bystanders separated the two men and the defendant left the area but returned 15 minutes later with a switchblade and stabbed the victim once in the chest,” the court said.
The victim died instantly, the court added.
The defendant had pled not guilty to the charges during the opening of his trial earlier this year.
Criminal Court Prosecutor Ishaq Abu Awad had asked the court to issue the maximum punishment against the defendant.
The court comprised justices Hayel Amr, Talal Aqrabawi and Ayman Ghzawi.
