Lower House to discuss its Rules of Procedure Tuesday

AMMAN — The Lower House is scheduled to discuss amendment to its Rules of Procedure on Tuesday after the Legal Committee discussed several suggestions.

MPs are most likely going to avoid any deduction of their financial benefits for not attending House sessions, according to parliamentary sources who spoke to The Jordan Times on condition of anonymity.

This controversial provision seeks to ensure attendance commitment by deputies.

Others who support the provision say they believe it will increase attendance levels and set the standard to maintain quorum during meetings.

The Lower House loses quorum several times during its sessions, with MPs leaving the meeting before it concludes, thus delaying the endorsement of key laws.

Following a meeting on Monday, head of the Legal Committee, Deputy Abdul Munim Odat (Irbid, 1st District), said the new suggestions were substantial and if endorsed would bring about a “qualitative leap” in the performance of the Lower House.
