King orders new aid to the needy

AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Friday directed the Royal Court to continue implementing initiatives aimed at helping underprivileged families, and supporting charity societies that provide care to orphans, the elderly and people with disabilities across the Kingdom.

The Royal directives included providing financial assistance to around 30,000 households “to help them survive their difficult living conditions and promote social solidarity”, according to a Royal Court statement.

The assistance is part of a programme King Abdullah launched years ago, which started with an initiative dubbed “Hashemite Charity Caravans” in 2004, which saw food parcels distributed among needy families in underprivileged urban and rural areas.

In synchronisation with the initiatives, the Social Development Ministry annually prepares a list of beneficiary families to receive the assistance, based on its database and studies covering the entyre country, the statement said.

The initiative, implemented for the fourth consecutive year, aims at enabling beneficiary facilities to help them sustain their services.

Meanwhile, His Majesty also directed concerned Royal Court officials to continue supporting 1,500 orphans from Gaza through the Gaza-based Wiam Charity Society.

Three years ago, the King received a distress call from the charity to support these orphans, who were under 13 years old and had lost their fathers.
