AMMAN — His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday discussed with a delegation from the US Congress, representing the committees on armed services and budget, cooperation in various areas, especially in the defence field.

According to a Royal Court statement, His Majesty underlined Jordan’s role in maintaining regional peace and stability and the Kingdom’s development plans during a meeting with the delegation, headed by Representative Rob Wittman.

In this context, King Abdullah commended the US’ support for the Kingdom’s reform plans.

The two sides also addressed the latest developments in the Middle East region, especially regional and international efforts to confront terrorist groups and radical ideologies.

On the Middle East peace process, the King stressed Jordan’s role and full support for all efforts that can help achieve peace and stability in the region and lead to the establishment of an independent and viable Palestinian state within pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The King said Jordan will continue with its efforts to protect, safeguard and look after Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem, support the Palestinians’ steadfastness and preserve their rights, in pursuance of the Hashemite custodianship of the holy sites in Jerusalem.

On the Syrian crisis, the King addressed the repercussions of the crisis on Syria’s neighbours and the entire region, stressing the importance of arriving at a comprehensive political solution to the conflict there.

The Monarch also expressed the Kingdom’s appreciation of the US’ support for the Kingdom to enable it to deal with the various difficulties emerging as a result of hosting Syrian refugees.

Members of the US congressional delegation expressed their country’s appreciation of Jordan’s efforts led by King Abdullah to help address regional and international issues and achieve world peace and stability.

Royal Court Chief Fayez Tarawneh and US Ambassador to Jordan Alice G. Wells were present at the meeting.
