Jordanians say security forces up to task of thwarting terror threats

AMMAN — Social media users in Jordan on Thursday expressed their faith in the security forces' ability to defend the country against any terrorist threats.

In a security message issued on Wednesday, the US embassy in Amman warned its citizens residing in Jordan against going to high-end malls because of a potential threat by extremist groups, and the government said security measures are in place to maintain public safety and security in light of the regional situation.

Commenting on the situation, social media users said they “stand firm” behind the country’s leadership and the concerned security bodies in the fight against terrorism and extremism.

Facebook user Hala Rousan said national security has always been the responsibility of all Jordanians, especially during this time.

“The Public Security Department’s number 911 is waiting for all of us in case we suspect anything,” she wrote, adding that all Jordanians are “policemen”.

Ahmad Hannoun said the US embassy must share any information it might have with the concerned authorities in order to “arrest criminals instead of spreading fear and chaos”.

Other social media users said they will not heed the warning.

“Our security forces have foiled many security threats without creating a fuss about it in the media,” tweeted Ziad Ababneh (@ZiadAbabneh).

“Out trust in security and intelligence forces is very high,” he added.

Twitter user Omar Biltaji (@omarbiltaji) said American embassies across the world warn their citizens about threats all year round.

“This is normal and we must not be scared,” he wrote.

Such threats must not hinder people from their normal lives, according to Mohammad Tarawneh.

“Destiny is already planned, so why hide and not go out … May God protect Jordan,” he posted.

Waleed Mohammad, a non-Jordanian, said everyone should be “cautious about everything these days” whether there is a real threat or not, due to the situation in the region.

“The most important thing is the safety of this country and its people,” he posted on Facebook, adding that his experience in Jordan was “pleasant”.

Some users posted photos of shopping malls full of customers.

“May Jordanian love of shopping conquer all [threats],” tweeted Jordan Schermerhorn (@jordanschermer).
