Households urged not to connect drainage pipes to manholes

AMMAN — The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Saturday called on households to refrain from connecting their drainage pipes to manholes on the street.

Water Ministry Spokesperson Omar Salameh said the practice is placing additional pressure on the sewage system.

“The sewage network overflows every winter due to such practices,” Salameh told The Jordan Times.

He added that water subscribers should protect their water gauges against freezing temperatures as winter approaches.

“We also urge the public to wrap their water gauges with burlap or a piece of cloth to protect them from damage.”
In addition, any exposed water pipes should be covered with burlap or rock wool to prevent freezing temperatures from damaging them, according to the ministry, which said on its website that subscribers will incur the repair costs if their meters are damaged.

Meanwhile, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) said the country will remain under the impact of a cold air mass and depression on Sunday.

The weather will be cold and partly cloudy, with chances of scattered showers, while temperatures in the capital will reach a high of 16°C during the day, dropping to a low of 7°C at night, a JMD meteorologist said on condition of anonymity.

“The impact of the combined weather conditions is forecast to subside by Sunday night,” the weather forecaster added.

Relatively cold and wet weather is expected to prevail this week, as the country will be affected by unstable weather conditions on Monday, according to the JMD.

Temperatures in Amman will range between a maximum of 16°C and a minimum of 7°C on Monday, while the weather will be cold, cloudy and wet, with southeasterly to southwesterly moderate to brisk winds.

It will continue to be cold and partly cloudy on Tuesday, with showers forecast in different parts of the country, the weather forecaster said, noting that daytime temperatures in Amman will reach a high of 16°C, dropping to a low of 8°C at night and winds will be southwesterly moderate to brisk.
