House Energy Committee briefed on uranium exploration findings

AMMAN — Marat Abzalov, an international uranium expert and consultant to the Jordan Uranium Mining Company, on Thursday briefed members of the Lower House’s Energy Committee on the developments in the Kingdom’s nuclear project.

At the meeting, held at the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC), Abzalov acquainted attendees with the results of the exploration studies of the first phase in the central region.

Jordan has a reserve of around 37,000 tonnes of yellowcake in the central region, Abzalov said, expecting the amount to increase by 17,000-21,000 tonnes as exploration continues.

JAEC Chairman Khaled Toukan said there are future plans for the next two years to build units to mine uranium in this area.

Committee members called for providing clear information about the project showing its feasibility to the national economy.
