Gendarmerie to recruit 3,000 members amid growing security challenges

AMMAN — Interior Minister Hussein Majali on Wednesday said the government, the Jordan Armed Forces and security bodies are closely following up on the current developments in Iraq, noting that all precautions have been taken to maintain security at the borderline and to protect Jordan from any dangers.  

Briefing the Council of Ministers on the conditions at the country’s border with Iraq, Majali said authorities “are following with concern” the developments in the eastern neighbour, reiterating Jordan’s position calling for a political solution that must be inclusive of all components of the Iraqi people to ensure Iraq’s security and stability, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

During its session, the Council of Ministers, chaired by Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, approved allocations to recruit 3,000 persons for the Gendarmerie Department this year.  

The decision has been taken to enable the directorate to carry out its mission, amid the current “emergency regional security and political situation”. 

It is also in line with its increasing security assignments, especially with the growing number of camps for Syrian refugees which the directorate is tasked with observing and guarding, besides its other duties in guarding institutions and diplomatic missions. 

The funds needed for this purpose will be drawn from budget allocations for urgent expenses.
