Court acquits 20 popular movement members

AMMAN — The state security court on Wednesday acquitted 20 members of a popular movement who had been detained for over a month for “undermining the state and the rule of law”.

The 20 defendants, who are residents of Salt and Amman, were accused of chanting slogans at a protest in Salt in August, according to court documents.

Also on Wednesday, the court sentenced Nidal Nimour to three years in prison for “spreading terrorism ideology” by posting pro-Islamic State (IS) statements on the Internet in violation of the Anti-Terrorism Law. 

The verdict raised to 16 the total number of citizens sentenced to prison for supporting IS since the launch of the US-led coalition against the terrorist group in mid-September.

Currently, another 20 Jordanians are facing trial at the court on similar charges.

Over 120 citizens have been arrested over the past three months for alleged ties to IS.
