King congratulates Brazilian president over Rio Olympic selection

AMMAN (Petra) - His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday sent a cable to Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulating him over Rio De Janeiro’s selection as the host city of the 2016 summer Olympics.

Dahabi highlights importance of activating role of spokespersons

AMMAN (Petra) - Prime Minister Nader Dahabi on Sunday underlined the importance of activating the role of ministries and public agencies’ spokespersons, stressing the need to provide them with sufficient information to allow them to do their work properly. During a meeting with several spokespersons who will participate in training programmes, Dahabi called on them to follow up on news issued by media outlets in accordance with the Access to Information Law.

Queen Rania Award Association congratulates teachers

AMMAN (JT) - On the occasion of World Teachers’ Day, celebrated on October 5, the Association of Queen Rania Al Abdullah Award for Excellence in Education congratulated all those involved in the Kingdom’s education sector for their “efforts in bearing the formidable responsibility of instilling knowledge and the love for education in youths”. Association Director Lubna Touqan called on “every individual within our community to remember the important role that their teachers have played in shaping their future”. Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania marked World Teachers’ Day in 2005 by launching the association, which encompasses the Queen Rania Al Abdullah Award for Distinguished Teachers and the Queen Rania Al Abdullah Award for Distinguished Principals, according to a statement released by the association.

Animal welfare workshop opens

AMMAN (Petra) - A three-day regional workshop to enhance cooperation in the prevention of cruelty to animals began on Sunday. Participants in the workshop, which was inaugurated by HRH Princess Alia, are scheduled to discuss issues relating to European legislation on the prevention of cruelty to animals. At the event, Princess Alia accepted the honorary presidency of the Euro-Arab Veterinary Association.

Rbeihat inaugurates Jerusalem conference

AMMAN (Petra) - Culture Minister Sabri Rbeihat on Sunday highlighted the importance of confronting Israel’s continuous attempts to change the demographic and architectural integrity of the Holy City of Jerusalem. Deputising for Prime Minister Nader Dahabi, Rbeihat inaugurated the conference, attended by 50 researchers and experts from several countries.

Columbia University Middle East Research Centre launches lecture series

AMMAN (JT) - The Columbia University Middle East Research Centre (CUMERC) and Jordan’s chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organisation (YPO-WPO) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly offer a lecture series on business, politics and culture. On Sunday, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh became the first presenter in the series’ autumn line up and addressed CUMERC and YPO-WPO community members, according to a Columbia University statement.

Police rescue British tourists in Wadi Rum

AMMAN (Petra) - Public Security rescue teams on Sunday evening managed to reach two British tourists who were stuck in a rocky area while climbing a high mountain in Wadi Rum. According to Public Security Department Major Mohammad Khatib, Royal Badia Forces searched for the two tourists from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm, but due to the rough terrain, they needed helicopter assistance. The craft’s crew managed to locate the tourists but could not land in the area so they flew the rescue team to the nearest point from where they managed to reach the tourists and provided them with first-aid, assistance and food and drink.

Education Ministry completes curricula computerisation

AMMAN (Petra) - The Education Ministry has completed computerisation of several curricula and has integrated them into the classroom at the Kingdom’s 100 Discovery Schools. The subjects include math, IT, science and Arabic among others, according to the ministry’s secretary general for educational and technical Affairs, Fawwaz Jaradat.

US embassy presents children’s books to 100 schools

AMMAN (JT) - Marking 60 years of Jordanian-American diplomatic ties, the US embassy in Amman donated a set of seven books by American authors to 100 schools in Ramtha, Northern Ghor, Ain Al Basha, Southern Badia and Aqaba. American Ambassador Stephen Beecroft presented a set of books to Minister of Education Walid Maani yesterday at the Princess Basma High School for Girls in Jubeihah, according to a statement released by the US embassy in Amman.
