5,394 people visit Southern Mazar shrines in April

AMMAN — A total of 5,394 people visited the shrines of Prophet Mohammad’s companions in the southern region in April, Osama Tarawneh, supervisor of Southern Mazar shrines said on Sunday.

Tarawneh noted that the area is witnessing active tourism movement from Jordan and abroad, due to the stability and security the Kingdom enjoys, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

He added that work is under way to build gardens and parks with a total area of seven dunums at a cost of JD650,000 to serve visitors to the shrines and local residents of Mutah and Southern Mazar towns, according to Petra.

The religious significance of the Southern Mazar sites dates back to 629AD when the leaders of the Muslim army — Jaffar Bin Abi Taleb, Zeid Bin Haretha and Abdullah Bin Rawaha — were killed in the Mutah battle against the Byzantines. The tombs and shrines are located some 150km south of Amman.
