AMMAN — A total of 290 families from Saudi Arabia live in Jordan, according to figures released by the Saudi Charitable Society for the Welfare of Saudi Families Abroad (Awasser).

These families comprise 909 individuals, Awasser said in the report published on its website.

According to the report, there are 2,103 Saudi families –– whose members are estimated at over 7,500 –– living in 31 countries across the world, with Kuwait topping the list in terms of hosting the largest number of Saudis.

A total of 780 families, with 3,495 members, live in Kuwait, according to Awasser. Jordan is second on the list, followed by Syria, Egypt and Bahrain.

Awasser Chairman Tawfiq Abdul Aziz Al Suwailem cited marriages with foreign and Arab women as one of the main reasons Saudis reside abroad, because wedding costs in some countries are “much” cheaper than in the Gulf kingdom, where the average cost is around 200,000 Saudi riyals (around $53,300).

In a statement posted on the Awasser website, Suwailem said many Saudis share family and blood ties with people in neighbouring countries, particularly Jordan, Iraq and Syria, who were married to women from the same tribes or families in these states.

Awasser, which is licensed and supervised by the Saudi interior ministry, works solely and specifically for Saudi families living abroad and traces Saudi citizens all over the world.
