AMMAN — Figures released recently by the Ministry of Labour indicate that 223 teenagers were found working in 219 workplaces during the first five months of this year.
The ministry provided counselling to 171 of them and issued 68 warnings and 14 violations against employers found in violation of the Labour Law, according to Shirin Tayyeb, head of the ministry’s anti-child labour department.
The Labour Law prohibits the recruitment of children under the age of 16 (or 18 in hazardous professions), while Jordan is also signatory to international conventions that ban child labour.
